New iPad

Nicknames: iPad 3, iPad (Retina Display), iPad HD, iPad 4G

The biggest change with the 3rd generation iPad is high-resolution graphics. The new Retina Display has four times as many pixels (2048 x 1536 vs. 1024 x 768) and a new A5X dual-core CPU with quad-core graphics. The rear-facing iSight 5 MP camera (up from 0.7 MP!) is capable of recording 1080i video, and the front-facing FaceTime camera is used primarily for video chat. As with the iPad 2, which remains available with a $100 price reduction, the high-def iPad comes in black or white.

For the first time, the iPad is a universal 3G device, so no more separate versions for CDMA and GSM carriers. In addition, the new iPad supports 4G LTE, which is wicked fast compared to 3G.

Capacities are 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB, just like the first generation iPad.

To support the more powerful processor and 4G LTE, the new iPad has a much more powerful battery - 42.5 watt-hours vs. 25 on the iPad 2 to achieve the same 10 hours of in-use time between charges. (Drop that to 9 hours when using 4G LTE.)

iOS 5.1 fully supports the Retina display, and all standard iOS apps, as well as iWork, iLife, and the new iPhoto app have been updated for the higher resolution screen.

The iPad is very green: no arsenic, BFR, mercury, or PVC, and it's highly recyclable.

Prices: 16 GB, no 3G, $499; 32 GB, $599; 64 GB, $699. 16 GB with 3G, $629; 32 GB, $729; 64 GB, $829.

For serious keyboarders, Apple has a full size wireless Bluetooth keyboard.

If you already have an iPhone or iPod touch, you can use your existing apps with the iPad - no need to buy them again.
