Classic Macs in the Intel Age
lives in Sweden and discovered Macs at his school in 2003. There were a few Bondi blue iMacs that were always unplugged, and when he plugged one in, he fell in love with the Macintosh.
Since then he has aqquired lots of Macs, mostly older ones, but also some newer G4s. Carl enjoys using old Macs and making them more useful in the world of 64-bit processing power.
- Is Wirecard a real alternative to PayPal?, 2008.08.07. PayPal has an established worldwide presence, but Wirecard is offered by a real bank and has lower fees. Any drawbacks?
- Is Windows XP better than Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger'?, 2008.07.28. Vista is a bust, and Leopard won't run on G3 Macs. How do legacy G3 and G4 Macs with Tiger compare with a fairly modern 2 GHz PC running Windows XP?
- Bringing a 233 MHz iMac into the Mac OS X age, 2008.07.15. Upgraded with 128 MB additional RAM and a larger hard drive, the iMacs was ready for Mac OS X 10.2 'Jaguar' - and runs it very nicely.
- Upgrading your eMac for better gaming and hi-res video performance, 2008.07.11. This eMac started out with too little RAM and not enough hard drive space. With several upgrades, it plays games quite well and handles HD video content nicely.
- Safari 3.1 Is the best browser for Macs and for Windows, 2008.07.08. Apple's Safari browser is fast, lightweight, and compatible with pretty much any website that doesn't require users to run Windows and Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.
- The Macintosh Portable started a notebook revolution, 2008.07.03. Before Apple introduced the Mac Portable, notebook computers were text-based and ran MS-DOS. Ever since, graphical interfaces have been the norm for laptops.
- Can Linux replace OS X on older Macs?, 2008.06.30. Looking at Ubuntu 8.04 on a 1 GHz PowerBook and Kubuntu 5.04 on a clamshell iBook.
- 'Snow Leopard' and the death of PowerPC support, 2008.06.23. It looks like Mac OS X 10.6 will only support Intel Macs - and possibly only 64-bit ones at that. Should G4 and G5 owners start looking at Linux?
- Mac OS X 10.2 'Jaguar' can unleash the power of G3 iBooks, 2008.06.17. After pulling a bad stick of RAM, the Dual USB iBook didn't have enough memory for Tiger or Linux. But even with just 128 MB of RAM, Jaguar did the job.
- Powerful classic Macs: Performa 5400 and Blue and White G3, 2008.06.11. Two useful old desktop Macs, a Performa 5400 and a Blue and White Power Mac G3, are a great complement to the Vintage Mac Network.

- Upgrading a Digital Audio G4 to work better in Leopard, Carl Nygren, 2008.06.02. In its original configuration, the dual 533 MHz Power Mac G4 was slow with Mac OS X 10.5, but add the right upgrades, and it runs Leopard quite nicely.
- My 4 favorite PowerBooks, My Turn, 2008.05.28. The PowerBook 150 has a big screen for a vintage PowerBook, the 165c has color, the 100 is diminutive, and Lombard has USB and a great keyboard.

- 500 MHz iMac with Panther great for Internet, watching video, and more, My Turn, 2008.05.08. At $65 with upgraded RAM and a bigger hard drive, it was too good to pass up, and it works very nicely with Mac OS X 10.3.
- Restoring a half dead PowerBook 100 to full functionality, My Turn, 2008.04.21. The old PowerBook was working from a floppy, but the hard drive simply refused to mount.

- PowerBook 150 still a winner, My Turn, 2008.03.27. An ancient PowerBook can be a great portable for word processing and email - and it can even browse the Web.
