Apple Releases iPhone Firmware 1.1.2 Update

Wired's Bryan Gardiner reports:

"Kicking things off a bit early, Apple (unofficially) released the 1.1.2 firmware update for its iPhone Thursday night and the initial reports seem to be mixed. Engadget is reporting that the TIFF jailbreak exploit is dead, along with iNdependence. TUAW's Erica Sadun, on the other hand, says that all the customized ringtones (i.e., non iTunes) on the iPhone were not only preserved after the upgrade, but actually got their own separate custom list. Interesting."

Latest iPhone Update Jailbroken Before It Hits the Ground

News.com's Tom Krazit reports:

"As expected, Apple released the OS X 1.1.2 update for the iPhone overnight to coincide with its debut in the U.K. and Germany. As not expected, it's been sprung from jail already.

"Erica Sadun at The Unofficial Apple Weblog obtained jailbreaking code for the 1.1.2 update almost simultaneous with its release last night, and tests this morning confirm that it works for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch...."

Testing the 1.1.2 iPhone Jailbreak

TUAW's Erica Sadun reports:

"After a really late night, I had the privilege of being able to test some of the jailbreak software this morning. This is not the final jailbreak software. That will involve using a nice graphical user interface. For now, I'm invited to use the ugly command-line stuff, which is still a great opportunity."

Rival iPhone Unlock Teams Hint at 1.1.2 Success

Register Hardware's Tony Smith reports:

"Hackers have worked out how to unlock the latest iPhone firmware, 1.1.2, to allow handsets running it to operate on any GSM network. Yet confusion reigns - one popular unlocking app may have been updated 'unofficially'.

"Firmware 1.1.2 was released this past Friday, just ahead of the UK and German iPhone launches. New European models being sold for use on the O2 UK and T-Mobile Germany networks come with 1.1.2 pre-installed."

Apple Promises New iPhone Features

Macworld UK's Jonny Evans reports:

"New features will be introduced to the iPhone in future software updates, Apple has promised as hackers break the company's latest anti-unlocking firmware update.

"Apple has promised that: 'All the complaints and feature requests we've had can be fixed and added by software upgrades,' a company spokesman told Pocket-Lint.

"The biggest iPhone criticism - lack of support for 3G - isn't upgradeable by a software patch, with Apple's network partners suggesting a 3G version of iPhone won't ship until late 2008."

iPhone Headphone Chemicals Violate California Law

Wired's Bryan Gardiner reports:

"After conducting its own 'independent lab tests,' the Center for Environmental Health (CEH), a non-profit consumer watchdog group, has concluded that the headphone cords for both the iPhone and iPod do indeed contain high levels of phthalates.

"While the previous Greenpeace analysis found 5070 parts per million (ppm) of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in the iPhone headset cable, the CEH's subsequent testing actually found 6200 ppm of DBP in the headset cable of the phone and 6300 ppm DBP in the iPod headset cable. That, according to the safety group, violates California state standards.

"'Apple customers should know that when they get their hands on an iPhone they may be getting a dose of toxic chemicals as well,' said Michael Green, executive director of CEH, in a statement issued Thursday...."

iPhone: Repair Needed Error Message

A new Apple Knowledge Base article says:

"In some cases, iPhone may not show up in the iTunes source list while displaying the following error message:

"Repair Needed. iPhone cannot make or receive calls. www.apple.com/support

"This error message indicates that iPhone has detected a hardware issue and a repair is required."

How to Upgrade Your Earbuds on the Cheap

c-h-a-o-s.com says:

"This is probably one of the easiest and cheapest mods I've ever done. The idea is from Kristian Engelbrecht - a Chaosprojects.com member - who passed it on to me. When he told me about it, I knew right away I had to do it and pass it on.

iPod earbud modification"I believe that if you can upgrade an everyday item for only a few bucks and a few minutes, you owe it to yourself to jump at it.

"This one truly fits that description. It will make your Apple In-Ear headphones fit much better in your ears, exclude the surrounding noise way more, and you probably won't ever experience the headphones falling out of your ears even when doing sports...."

Don't Throw Out Your Broken iPod: Fix It

The New York Times' Peter Wayner says:

"A few months ago, Stephen Ironside, a student at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, confronted a minor but modern tragedy: the iPod that filled his life with song stopped working.

"The device was out of warranty, and Apple would not fix it free. So he left it in a drawer until he happened to read a blog posting on CrunchGear.com that described how he might fix it - with a small, folded piece of paper. Mr. Ironside celebrated by posting thanks on the blog: 'I've been on CDs for months. You saved my life (and my iPod).'"

"Gadget-fixing is adapting to the modern era. Neighborhood repair shops are all but gone, and along with them the repairmen who could offer casual advice, even when that advice was whether it was worth repairing the device. But Web sites can help users find and share solutions that can save a device from the landfill. If the job is too tricky, a number of Internet-based firms offer highly specialized repairs via overnight mail."

iPod touch 'Best Portable Media Player Ever'

PC Magazine's Tim Gideon says:

"With an excellent interface and elegant design, the iPod touch is simply the best portable media player ever made."

"This is probably the best portable media player ever made."

iMapIdle iPhone Application Simulates 'Push Email' with Your IMAP Server

PR: iMapIdle is an iPhone application that simulates "Push Email" with your IMAP server. It's in its early stages but the current features are:

  • listens in the background waiting for new IMAP mail even if you are in sleep/standby mode
  • notifies you via a popup and/or sound. You choose how to be notified. Sound notification should use the same method your mail client uses (i.e.: if you have vibrate on, it'll vibrate as well)
  • popup notification allows you to choose whether the mail client should check for email right there by forcing the mail client to check the server (it doesn't launch the mail client but just forces it to check the server). NOTE: Don't choose this if you are in the mail client as it will exit (you've been warned). The popup will disappear after 20 seconds and if you miss it the iMapIdle icon will show you how many popup notifications you have missed
  • supports SSL connections and special support for Gmail IMAP

Installation:

  • unzip iMapIdle.zip
  • scp -r iMapIdle.app root@{iphone_ip}:/Applications
  • restart springboard (i.e.: reboot phone or use customize to restart SpringBoard for you)
  • should see a new iMapIdle icon. Click to setup iMapIdle options and to activate. Click home button to exit gui and iMapIdle should be running in background

Notes:

  • this has only been personally tested on 1.1.1. Reports are that it works under 1.0.2 as well
  • have no idea at this point how it effects battery
  • use at your own risk

Updates:

  • 10/28 I've currently found a way to force the mail app to check the server. I'm testing it out now to make sure there's no ill side effects and I'll then update the download
  • 10/29 Well unfortunately the way I use to trigger the mail app to check the server, works when the mail app is not running but when it is running it closes it, which is not good. Still researching...
  • 10/30 New version available (0.2). I've compromised with forcing the mail app to poll. When you have popup notification enabled you have a choice to force polling right then. Do not select this while you are in the mail client as it will exit unless you don't care what you were currently doing.
  • 11/1 Have potentially found a way to keep WiFi/edge up and running and allow background apps to keep on ticking when you are in Sleep mode. Will release a new version of iMapIdle soon to take advantage of this
  • 11/2 New version available (0.3). This version should work in sleep mode. Note that when this runs you are keeping WiFi and/or edge enabled during sleep so battery usage may be effected.
  • 11/6 New version available (0.4). Supports SSL connections and special support for Gmail IMAP. Debug log option to record operation on your device
  • 11/8 New version available (0.5). This is strictly a stability release. I noticed previous versions would crash after some amount of time. I believe I've fixed this

Funambol Releases First Open Source Native App for iPhone Contact Synchronization

PR: Illustrates how open source community and development model rapidly advance mobile innovation

Funambol, a leading provider of mobile 2.0 messaging software powered by open source, today announced it has released an open source native app for iPhone contact synchronization. The Funambol plug-in for iPhone synchronizes the iPhone's address book with contacts from popular sources such as Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, GNOME Evolution and SyncML servers such as the Funambol server.

Until now, contact synchronization on the iPhone was possible only using a cable connected to a computer running iTunes. The new Funambol plug-in is the first open source native app for iPhone address book synchronization. To learn more, view screenshots and download the software, visit:

http://www.funambol.com/solutions/iphone.php

"In mobile, the open road is the only road. The pace of development must be rapid, the compatibility wide and the cost reasonable. Open networks and devices are on the rise and are transforming the mobile industry," said Fabrizio Capobianco, CEO of Funambol. "The Funambol open source community has been operating at this pace for years and is delivering innovation that give people access to features they otherwise wouldn't have."

The Funambol iPhone plug-in was developed in large part by Patrick Ohly, a longtime member of the Funambol community. Demonstrating the full value of open source, he set out to develop a native iPhone sync solution. He upgraded SyncEvolution ( http://www.estamos.de/projects/SyncML/ ) for the iPhone which provides the core synching capabilities. Funambol adapted the plug-ins user interface from its work with other mobile devices.

"Just as the cable physically ties the iPhone to a computer, the dependency on iTunes locks iPhone users into a specific platform. Because SyncML is a well-established, open standard for data synchronization, adding support for it to the iPhone was an obvious choice," said Patrick. "Extending SyncEvolution was simple – the hard part was to figure out how the contact data on the iPhone could be accessed, due to the current lack of documentation. Hopefully, Apple's SDK will fill that gap."

Earlier this year, Funambol announced the availability of the first over-the-air (OTA) web-based contacts app for the iPhone. With the addition of this new native app for the iPhone, Funambol once again demonstrates the strength of the open source model. With the release of the Apple iPhone SDK in Q1, 2008, Funambol looks forward to extending the iPhone plug-in for capabilities such as calendar sync and push email.

Funambol provides open source-based mobile email, contacts and calendars for 1.5 billion mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPod, and phones from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and other device manufacturers.

Funambol provides mobile 2.0 messaging software that is powered by open source. The company is the leading provider of open source push email and PIM synchronization solutions for the mass market. Funambol's open source software has been downloaded more than 1,500,000 times by a global network of 10,000 developers in 200 countries. The commercial version of Funambol's software has been deployed at service providers, mobile operators, portals, Global 1000 businesses, hardware OEMs/ODMs and ISVs including customers such as 1&1, EarthLink and Computer Associates.

Funambol is headquartered in Redwood City, California with an R&D center in Italy
