The Distinctive Smell of a New Mac

- 2004.05.04

Did you know new Macintosh computers have a smell?

It's true, they do.

Now, here at Low End Mac we don't often get to smell new computers - most of the time we get to smell the dust that has accumulated and been lightly simmered on a hot CPU for years - but every now and then we do get to experience a new Mac.

It's kind of like that new car smell you get when they open the door to a brand new car for the first time. It's never even been sweated in by a burly car trailer guy moving the car onto the lot so it could be sold.

Macs have a scent like that as well. I'm beginning to suspect Apple is deliberately spraying something in the box to give it that piquant odor.

It is a little bit of plastic bag with a hint of lindenberry followed by a rush of Styrofoam.

Some days I need Smell-O-Vision™ more than others.
