Introduction to Camera Lenses
The beauty of 35mm SLR photography is the vast range of lenses available, a range unmatched in any other format. While there are some specialty lenses like Voigtländer's 12mm Heliar and soft focus lenses made for some medium format cameras, almost any lens imaginable is made for the 35mm SLR.
There are several reasons for this diversity. One is the popularity of the cameras themselves, which creates a larger maket for lenses. Part of the popularity is due to the size of the cameras and lenses, which are significantly smaller than comparable lenses on medium format cameras. The larger market and smaller size also leads to lower costs for lenses that fit 35mm SLRs.
Lenses fit a wide variety of categories, including wide-angle (less than 40mm), normal (40-60mm), telephoto (70mm and longer), macro (which focus closer than most lenses), and zooms, which offer a range of focal lengths.
