Safari 3.1: The World's Fastest Browser?

ApplePR: Apple on Tuesday introduced Safari 3.1, claming it to be the world's fastest web browser for Mac and Windows PCs. Safari loads web pages 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2. Safari also runs JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers and is the first browser to support the latest innovative web standards needed to deliver the next generation of highly interactive Web 2.0 experiences*. Safari 3.1 is available immediately as a free download for both Mac OS X and Windows.

"Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows is blazingly fast, easy to use, and features an elegant user interface," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "And best of all, Safari supports the latest audio, video, and animation standards for an industry-leading Web 2.0 experience."

To update to Safari 3.1, use Apple Software Update or a standalone installer [your editor highly recommends the latter]. You only need to use one of these methods to update your computer.

Software Update will automatically check for the latest Apple software using the Internet. (You might have followed a Software Update link to this article to learn more about the update.) If your computer is not up-to-date, other available software updates will appear.

Download the update installer and run it manually. This is a useful option when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once [or just if you want to minimize the potential for problems - ed].

Safari software updates are delivered seamlessly through Apple's Software Update application, which automatically checks for updates.

Safari 3.1 for Mac OS X requires Mac OS X Leopard or Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.11, a minimum of 256 MB of memory, and is designed to run on any Intel-based Mac or a Mac with a PowerPC G5, G4, or G3 processor and built-in FireWire. Safari 3.1 for Windows requires Windows XP or Windows Vista, a minimum of 256 MB of memory, and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor.

"Fortune recently reported that Mac sales worldwide went up 60% last month compared to the same period in 2007. At the same time, Apple's share of the US Market has almost doubled from 9% to 14% over the same period. Fortune reports that in dollar terms, Apple captured a full 25 percent of the US computer market last month."

Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?

TidBitsTidBits' Rich Mogull says:

"When people find out I'm a security expert, I can almost guarantee the ensuing conversation will evolve in one of three ways. If they are technologically illiterate, I'll have to explain I don't know anything about trading securities and can't help them with any hot tips. If they use Windows, I'll tell them to back up their data and reformat the system. But if they use Macs, the discussion usually becomes a little more complicated....

"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac)."

Apple Updates AirPort Express with 802.11n

ApplePR: Apple has updated its AirPort Express mobile base station with 802.11n to deliver up to five times the performance and twice the range of the previous model*. Priced at just $99, AirPort Express is the world's smallest 802.11n-based mobile base station. It can be plugged directly into the wall for wireless Internet connectivity and USB printing at home or easily brought on the road for wireless freedom wherever there is an Internet connection. AirPort Express features AirTunesô, which works seamlessly with iTunes to give users a simple and inexpensive way to wirelessly stream iTunes music from a PC or Mac to any room in the house.

AirPort Express includes a built-in combination digital and analog audio connector allowing users to connect to a home stereo or powered speakers. iTunes automatically detects remote speakers and displays them in a simple popup list for the user to select. Multiple AirPort Express base stations can be set up around a home, each connected to a set of powered speakers for a whole-home music experience. AlSoft Releases DiskWarrior 4.1 CD Updater

PR: AlSoft has released the DiskWarrior 4.1 CD updater for registered DiskWarrior 4 version 4.0 users as a free download. This updater will allow you to create a new startup CD containing the updated DiskWarrior application.

Note that the new startup CD will start up the same set of Macs as your current DiskWarrior CD. Your new CD will not start up any Mac that your current DiskWarrior CD can not.

DiskWarrior 4 version 4.1 is now shipping on DiskWarrior CD revision 42. This CD is a universal startup CD that can start up both PowerPC and Intel Macs.
