Core 2 7% Faster, iMac Goes Core 2, G4/1.6 GHz Dual, SAFE Drive Secures Data, Wireless Headphones, and More
Compiled by Charles Moore and edited by Dan Knight - 2006.09.08
This Week's Apple and Desktop Mac News
It's been an interesting week. Apple moved the iMac to Core 2 Duo processors on Wednesday, and at the same time they moved the entry-level Mac mini from Core Solo to Core Duo - and gave both minis a speed bump. Digit reports that Core 2 averages 7% faster than "Core1", and we expect to see the MacBook Pro line updated to Core 2 shortly.
Logitech's Revolution mouse, the one with flywheels, continues to garner praise, as does the four-core Mac Pro. And there's a new game in town for running Windows apps on the Mac: CrossOver, in beta, emulates Windows (not a Windows PC) on Intel Macs so you don't have to buy and install Windows.
PowerBook, iBook, MacBook, and other portable computing is covered in The 'Book Review.
All prices are in US dollars unless otherwise noted.

Core 2 Duo 7% Faster than Core Duo
Digit reports:
"Eight months ago Intel rocked the mobile processor world with its first dual-core CPUs, which boosted the speed of a notebook performing two tasks simultaneously by 30 per cent. Now comes Core Duo's successor, Core 2 Duo, accompanied by Intel claims of even better performance and support for the coming era of 64-bit computing. Should you kick yourself for buying that Core Duo notebook in May?
"PC World (Digit's sister magazine) tests suggest you shouldn't sweat it too much. Notebooks get only a small performance boost with Intel's new processor, formerly code-named Merom, and battery life appears to remain about the same."
Editor's note: Although these tests were run on Windows notebooks, Macs using Core 2 should see comparable performance gains. dk

Mac OS X: Sharing a Printer with Mac OS 9 Computers
An updated Apple Knowledge Base article says:
"Mac OS X 10.2 or later can share printers with Mac OS 9-based Macs using one of the methods listed below, depending on what type of clients will be printing to the shared printer and the version of Mac OS X you are using.
"With either method, the steps will need to be repeated if the IP address of the computer sharing the printer changes, so it's best that you assign your Mac OS X computer a static IP address if possible (consult your network administrator or router documentation for information on doing this)."

Logitech's Revolutionary 'Mouse that Roars'
Time Magazine's Wilson Rothman reports:
"Logitech is a lithe innovator. Take, for instance, its Wireless DJ music system, which I recently reviewed. Rather than accept Apple's control over home audio as a fait accompli, Logitech built a system that freely streams iTunes-purchased tracks around the house. Logitech's latest mouse proves that the company never stops looking forward.
"Two years ago, Logitech introduced laser technology as the standard for reliable cordless mice, and its competitors scrambled to follow suit. The MX Revolution reveals three impressive new features which will no doubt be copied in years to come."

Mac Pro 'a Winner on Multiple Levels'
CNet UK's Rich Brown reports:
"Professional designers, digital media hobbyists and those simply into great design: meet your new lust object. Apple's new Mac Pro (£1,699 for the base model) is a winner on multiple levels. From the outside, it looks great - far more put together than any Windows-based box. Inside, it boasts powerful specs, including two dual-core Intel Xeon processors, for a total of four processing cores. And to top it off, it's a great value.
"The only thing that's missing, if anything, is a practical reason for a casual user to justify the purchase; there's more computer here than you'll need for day-to-day tasks. Some users might miss the Apple Remote that made the Mac mini and the iMac so accessible as Media Center PCs, and as always, Apple's high-end desktop is not intended for the gaming crowd."

CrossOver Mac Free Beta: Run Windows Applications on Macintel without Windows
PR: CodeWeavers, Inc. are providing a free time limited beta version of CrossOver Mac to anyone that is willing to test CrossOver.
CrossOver Mac will be the very best way to run your Windows applications on your Intel based Mac. It will let you install and run Windows programs as though they were native, all without having to buy or run a copy of Windows itself.
This beta version will give you a taste of the promise of CrossOver, but should be considered an early test release - we intend to make substantial further improvements before we ship a production version.
If you're not interested in experimental software, you should skip this and wait for notice of the production release. However, if you are interested in helping us to test CrossOver, we would very much like your feedback.
We strongly recommend that you review the list of forums or search the Compatibility Center to see if your specific needs will be addressed.
To be candid, at this point we've focused on what we think Mac users would like us to work on. But we'd really rather focus on what Mac users really want. To that end, we're hoping you can help us by testing the beta software.
