The third generation of slot-loading iMacs was introduced in February 2001. These "Early 2001" iMacs saw the adoption of an improved G3 CPU in some models, and CD-RW replaced DVD-ROM on the faster models.

With their release, FireWire became a standard feature on all iMacs, and Apple embraced the ATI Rage 128 Ultra with 16 MB of dedicated video RAM on the models with the improved G3 CPU. The new G3e CPU used in some models has an on-chip level 2 cache that was smaller but much faster than the backside cache used in other iMacs.

AirPort is supported, but it requires a special adapter card to hold the AirPort card in place.

There were four versions of the Summer 2000 iMac:

iMac 400

The 400 MHz indigo iMac was the runt of the litter. It had 64 MB of RAM, a 10 GB hard drive (vs. 7 GB in its predecessor), and a 24x CD-ROM. This was one of two slot-loading iMac that didn't include FireWire support. It retailed for US$899, $100 less than the Summer 2000 400 MHz iMac DV.

iMac 500

The next step up was the 500 MHz iMac, which was available in indigo, blue Dalmatian, and flower power (we kid you not). This was the slowest iMac with the new PPC 750CXe (a.k.a. G3e) CPU. It had a 20 GB hard drive and an 8x4x24x 24x CD-RW drive. It sold for US$1,199.

iMac 500 (International version)

There was also a 500 MHz"international" iMac, which was available in the same color schemes as the North American iMac 500. This iMac used the older G3 CPU with its backside cache and ATI Rage Pro video It had a 20 GB hard drive and an 8x4x24x 24x CD-RW drive.

iMac SE 600

At the top of the heap was the 600 MHz iMac, which had a 40 GB hard drive, 128 MB of RAM, and came in snow and graphite. It retailed at US$1,499.

These iMacs were replaced by 500-700 MHz ones in July 2001.
