The 400 MHz iMac 2001 is the slowest member of the iMac 2001 familyand has the least features. It is the only model to use the original G3(PowerPC 750) processor and the only model that doesn't include aCD-RW drive.
To all intents, this is the 400 MHz iMacDV at a $100 price reduction.
- If you are running Mac OS 9.1 or later, iMacFirmware Update 4.1.9 should be installed. If you are using MacOS X, you must boot from a Mac OS 9.1-9.2.2 writeablepartition (not a CD or network disk) prior to updating. You cannotupdate to OS X 10.3 or later unless you first install FirmwareUpdate 4.1.9.

Cautions
- G3 Macs may not be supported in Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard", whichis scheduled to ship in October. Apple has not spoken on therecord, but the beta cannot be installed on any G3 Mac.
- You cannot plug the iPod shuffle directly into the iMac's USBport - it will notfit. It will not charge if plugged into a keyboard USB port oran unpowered USB hub. To charge it while using it with your iMac,you must us a USB extension cable, powered USB hub, iPod shuffledock, or a USB power adapter.
- UpdateFirmware Before Installing Jaguar!, Geoff Duncan, TidBITS,2002.10.28. If your firmware isn't at version 4.1.9, you need toboot into OS 9.1 and install it before attempting to install Jaguar(OS X 10.3) on your slot-loading CD-ROM or DVD iMac.
- iMacs released in February 2001 and July 2001 should have iMacPower Management Update 1.1 installed to solve a problem withlosing PRAM settings when the computer is disconnected from powerfor an extended period of time. See KnowledgeBase article 120048 for full details.
- OS X: MacworldUK noted on 2001.03.28 that the OS 9.1 CD included withOS X will not install on the PowerBook G4, Power Mac G4(133 MHz bus), or 2001 iMacs. The solution is to use the Mac OS 9.1CD that came with the computer.
- You must have the keyboard plugged directly into an iMac USBport to boot with the power key (Eject on the Apple Pro Keyboard);it will not work if the keyboard is attached to a hub.
- The iMac loads the MacOS Toolbox into RAM, unlike other Macswhich use it from ROM. You lose the use of 3 MB of memory but gainfaster performance.
