My First Mac
In Love With the Mac GUI
Ronald Buckner - March 2002
My first Mac was a PowerBook 145 with 4 MB RAM and a 40 MB hard drive. I had always used Macs at work, and I loved the interface. I had never used a Wintel machine.
I fell in love with the "look" of the Mac GUI. Only problem was, the PowerBook 145 was painfully slow.
Five years later I bought a Performa 6400/200 for $300 from my work. They decided to convert to Wintel machines, which sadly I have to deal with now.
I still was not satisfied with the Performa 6400/200. It is a good machine but not very upgradeable.
Imagine my surprise when
the
computer guy at work said he had some old Macs in storage that he
was giving away. Now I have a Power
Mac 8500/180 with 136 MB RAM and a 4 gig hard drive (soon to be
upgraded with a Sonnet G3 500 MHz card).
I love this machine. I know it is not the top of the line, but it is enough for me. I am running Mac OS 9.1, and I like it.
I do not need OS X right now. Maybe I will invest in a TiBook in the future, but right now for what I do with my computer the 8500/180 is just fine.
