Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" is available as an upgrade to anyone with an Intel-based Mac. At $29 for a single user license or $49 for a 5-user family pack, we think everyone with an Intel Mac should upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6.

Apple announced the Mac Box Set at Macworld Expo - one box with Mac OS X, iLife '09, and iWork '09. The regular Box Set retails for just $40 more than a single copy of Leopard, and the 5-user Family Pack lists at only $30 more than a Leopard family pack.

Mac OS X 10.5 came to market in late 2007 and really raised the bar on what hardware was officially supported. Apple's stated requirements are a G4 or later CPU running at 867 MHz or faster, at least 512 MB of memory (1 GB recommended), and 9 GB of available hard drive space. Leopard is the first version of the Mac OS to ship as a "universal binary" that can run on both PowerPC and Intel-based Mac hardware.

Our readers discovered that Leopard can run on any Mac with a G4 CPU and AGP graphics, although you have to work around checks in the installer to put OS X 10.5 on unsupported hardware. Leopard can run on 350 MHz G4 Macs once you've worked around installation issues, although not with the same performance you'd see on a fully supported Mac. We even have reports of a few running Leopard with only 384 MB of RAM. See our article on Unsupported Leopard Installation for more details.

As it's now discontinued, OS X 10.5 is beginning to command a premium price.

Mac OS X 10.6 is arriving on August 28, 2009, and it further raised the bar - every Intel Mac with 1 GB of RAM can run it, but no PowerPC Macs can. It's the end of the Mac OS road for those G4 and G5 Macs.
