Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" is supported on all Intel-based Macs with at least 512 MB of RAM and the ability to run the DVD-based installer. You can order Leopard from the online Apple Store for US$129 for a single user, $199 for a 5-user family pack.

Best prices on new MacBook Pro models are down about $50 from our last report, and some refurbs have dropped by $100, which could indicate that Apple is clearing the channel to make way for new models in January.

Apple bumped the MacBook Pro to 2.2 and 2.4 GHz in June, followed by a 2.6 GHz build-to-order option in October. The 'Santa Rosa' models have nVidia graphics, support up to 4 GB of RAM, and have an 800 MHz system bus. The new 15" model is also "green"; it uses a mercury-free, LED-backlit display.

The current 15" MacBook Pro includes 2 GB of RAM, has an LED backlit 1440 x 900 widescreen display, and FireWire 800. The 17" model has a 1680 x 1050 display (1920 x 1200 optional) and three USB 2.0 ports - one more than the 15" model. All current MBP models can be ordered with matte or glossy displays.

The original Core Duo models ran hotter than the Core2 models and support a maximum of 2 GB of RAM. Pre-Santa Rosa Core2 models can handle up to 3 GB of memory.
