2008.05.07

Just four months after Apple moved the MacBook to the 'Santa Rosa' chipset, they've improved the MacBook yet again. The Feb. 2008 version ships at 2.1 GHz and 2.4 GHz clock speeds, which are respectively 5% and 9% faster than the models they replace. The new MacBooks ship with at least 1 GB of RAM and can be expanded to 4 GB. The new Penryn CPU has a smaller level 2 cache (3 MB vs. 4 MB) but an enhanced SSE4 velocity engine. The new models also have bigger hard drives: 120 GB at the bottom, 160 GB in the middle, and a whopping 250 GB in the top-end black MacBook.

Pre-Santa Rosa MacBooks ship with Tiger installed and should also include an upgrade copy of Leopard; the Santa Rosa models only include Leopard. If there's some reason you want or need Tiger, pick the recently discontinued MacBook over the new Santa Rosa model.

Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' is supported on all MacBooks. If you want to upgrade an older MacBook to 10.5, be sure to check our Best Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Deals.

The Core2 CPU runs quite a bit cooler and has about 10% more power than the Core Duo at the same CPU speed. Because the original Core Duo MacBooks tend to run hot, we recommend the newer Core2 models. The 2 GHz Core2 MacBooks include 1 GB of RAM and dual-layer SuperDrives.

All MacBooks have a 1280 x 800 glossy display. The base 2.0 GHz model has a Combo drive and 80 GB hard drive. The 2.2 GHz models have 8x dual-layer SuperDrives (Apple used single-layer drives in the Core Duo MacBooks).

We strongly recommend running the MacBook with at least 1 GB of memory. If you can swing it, max out to 3 GB. (See Is More RAM More Important than Matched RAM in the MacBook? for more on unmatched memory.)

The best deals are marked in bold type in the full listings below. Canadian dealers are listed separately. Listings note RAM/hard drive size. Memory should be upgraded in pairs to reach 1 GB or 2 GB total RAM.

Core Duo models are listed before Core2 models, which are more efficient and run cooler. Prices may be limited to quantity on hand. Not responsible for typos. Please email any corrections or additional sources with competitive prices to  Dan Knight .
