Apple overhauled the iMac line in October, moving to larger screens with a 16:9 aspect ratio and making 3.06 GHz the standard CPU speed. The "Late 2009" iMacs come in 21.5" and 27" sizes, and the top-end model uses a quad-core Intel i5 CPU. Build-to-order options include a 3.33 GHz CPU for the dual-core models and a 2.8 GHz quad-core Intel i7 CPU for the top-end iMac, which has the power to compete with the quad-core Mac Pro.

Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" is supported on all Intel-based Macs, and new iMacs ship with Snow Leopard installed.

Apple refurbs, which have a one year warranty, are sometimes less expensive than used iMacs. For those who can't afford this much power or need Classic Mode, the iMac G5 may be an attractive option.

The new iMacs are distinguished by their new screen sizes. The "Early 2009" models are marked "nVidia", the summer 2007 iMacs "Aluminum", and so forth.
