Apple updated the aluminum iMac on Monday, adopting the more efficient Penryn Core2 Duo CPU with its 6 MB level 2 cache and running on a 1066 MHz system bus. Clock speeds now range from 2.4 GHz to a 3.06 GHz build-to-order option for the 24" iMac. 802.11n WiFi, an 8x SuperDrive, and ATI Radeon graphics remain standard, and there is a build-to-order option for an nVidia GeForce 8800 graphics processor in the 24" model. The 20" aluminum iMacs are the only iMacs with an 18-bit color display; the 24" has a 24-bit display, as do all previous LCD iMacs. Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" is supported on all Intel-based Macs, and the new iMacs ship with 10.5.2.

Sometimes Apple refurbs, which have a one year warranty, are less expensive than used iMacs. For who can't afford this much power, the iMac G5 may be an attractive option.

The new iMacs are marked "Penryn", the summer 2007 iMacs "Aluminum", late 2006 models "Core2" models, and first generation Intel iMacs "Core Duo".
