November 19 in Low End Mac History
Nov. 18 - Nov.
20
1999
- Screen size and
resolution, Dan Knight, Online Tech Journal. Why is the iMac
fuzzy at 1024 x 768? Why does a 17" monitor look unsharp at 1280 x
960?
2001
- Mac OS X: Developers and
users, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. Why developers and users have a
very different perspective on Mac OS X.
- First person shooters:
Netiquette and tactics, Korin Hasegawa-John, Mac Daniel. Online
gaming etiquette and strategies for staying alive in first person
shooters.
- What else were you XPecting?,
Jeff Adkins, The Lite Side. "A mole at Microsoft leaked the
following internal memo, apparently an in-house employee newsletter
at Microsoft."
- Golf and computers, Andrew
W. Hill, My Turn. How computers are sometimes like golf.
- The 'Book Review 2001.11.19,
Charles Moore. 500 MHz WallStreet upgrade, mini USB hub, FireWire,
laptop cases, and bargain 'Books - with a special WallStreet
focus.
2002
2004
- iTunes is great but still
trails SoundJam, WinAmp in some areas, Adam Robert Guha, Apple
Archive. Free music player software had killed off most of the
competition, and that's not good for innovation.
- Dual core G5s, EyeTV for USB
2.0, SideTrack trackpad software, myPower for iPod, and more,
The 'Book Review. Also Kensington's convertible
mouse, O'Reilly fan books, Sony's dual-layer DVD burner, SportSuit
Santa for iPod, bargain 'Books from $179 to $2,399, and more.
2007
- Options for replacing your older
iPod, Adam Robert Guha, Apple Archive. Whether you've run out of
space on your old iPod or want features it doesn't have, here are your
options in new and used iPods.
- Mac mini value, reuse the best
recycling, and more unsupported Leopard reports, Dan Knight, Low
End Mac Mailbag. More protest of the Road Apple label for the Mac mini,
the best form of recycling is reuse, and Mac OS X 10.5 on additional
unsupported hardware.
- Classic still useful, a cooler
running MacBook, Panther vs. Tiger for text editing, and more,
Charles Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Classic is far from dead, Text
Edit in Tiger slower than in Panther, the case for a quieter laptop,
Buffalo WiFi in Pismo, and Word files on an 800K floppy.
2008
- Every working
computer is useful to someone, Allison Payne, The Budget Mac.
Whether it's a PowerBook 1400, G3 iMac, or Power Mac G4, it could be
all the computer someone needs.
- Leopard runs very
nicely on PowerPC Macs, Simon Royal, Tech Spectrum. Some claim that
Mac OS X 10.5 is so optimized for Intel Macs that it runs poorly on
PowerPC hardware. That's simply not the case.
- No high definition iTunes
video for you, Dan Knight, Mac Musings. The October 2008 MacBooks
are preventing users from viewing some high-def iTunes content from
being viewed on their external displays. Poor form!
- 3 WeatherBug options
for Apple users, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Have
instant access to current local weather conditions with a Dashboard
widget, iPhone app, or Firefox plugin.
