November 13 in Low End Mac History
Nov. 12 - Nov.
14
1998
- iDream of iMac, Dan Knight,
iMac Musings. Why a Mac power user would love to buy an iMac.
2000
- SuperMac, Seagate, and USB,
Charles Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Hard drive nightmares, but
a new USB card installs like a dream.
2001
2002
2003
- First impressions of the 14"
iBook G4, Dirk Pilat, Down But Not Out. "Apple has managed to
produce a machine that combines everything I want from a portable
computer with appropriate processor performance for a competitive
price."
2006
- Add desktop Trash and a classic
Apple Menu to OS X for free, Hardy Menagh, Empowered. Two
favorite features from the classic Mac OS have never been part of
OS X, but that doesn't mean you have to do without them.
- More features of Apple's
Extended Keyboard II, Tommy Thomas, Welcome to Macintosh. The
earlier article on the Extended Keyboard II overlooked some useful
features. Readers explain what we missed.
- Disabling deep sleep on MacBooks,
'Other Red' a scam?, mixed RAM can reduce performance, and
more, Charles W Moore, Miscellaneous Ramblings. Also other disk
utilities Mac owners should know about, Lombard cooling, Netscape 7
on OS 9, Final Vinyl for ripping LPs, and more.
2007
- Cross-platform computing: Better
than it's ever been, Andrew J Fishkin, Best Tools for the Job. Macs
can read PC media, both Macs and Windows PCs play nice with each other
on networks, and emulation makes it easy for Intel Macs to run Windows
apps.
- Beyond Google, 10 years on the G3,
the Cube is not a Road Apple, and more, Dan Knight, Low End Mac
Mailbag. Also the 64-bit advantage of Core 2, OS 9 on a USB flash drive,
sound problems since switching to Leopard, and 7200 rpm in an
eMac.
2008
- Apple rewrites the rules for
games, Tim Nash, Taking Back the Market. With the iPhone/iPod touch
and the online App Store, Apple has created a market for low cost games
that has other platforms worried.
- The future of
PowerPC Macs and software as 'Snow Leopard' approaches, Simon
Royal, Tech Spectrum. Apple phased out Classic Mode and G3 support with
'Leopard' last year, and next year's OS X 10.6 won't support any
PowerPC Macs. Will other developers abandon PowerPC as well?
- Windows 7 Is
Microsoft's opportunity to get Vista right, Frank Fox, Stop the
Noiz. Microsoft made a lot of mistakes with Vista and earned a black
eye. Windows 7 gives it a chance to learn from the past and move
ahead.
- Kensington
Ci95m Wireless Mouse: Great battery life, smooth performance,
Charles Moore, 'Book Value. Kensington's slim wireless mouse is well
built, works smoothly, has great battery life, and avoids Bluetooth
pairing and wake-up issues.
2009
- DVI-to-Mini
DisplayPort converters: A ray of hope for the 27" iMac, Dan Bashur,
Apple, Tech, and Gaming. The new iMac accepts DisplayPort input, but it
won't work with the usual DVI-to-Mini DisplayPort adapters. It requires
a more expensive converter.
- iPhone worms, Android vs.
iPhone, Radio Shack to retail iPhone, Sticky Stand for car, and
more, iNews Review. Also iPhone owner personality survey,
newspapers on your iPhone, breathalyzer app, first iPod/iPhone
projector, and more.
- OS X 10.6.2 breaks Atom netbooks,
320 GB MicroDrive, Adamo XPS world's thinnest laptop, and more, The
'Book Review. Also Mini DisplayPort now a VESA standard, Modbook price
drop, Litl Webbook Internet appliance, 3G USB device from AT&T, and
more.
- Quad-core iMacs shipping, OS X
10.6.2, Safari 4.0.4, internal Blu-ray drive for Mac mini, and
more, Mac News Review. Also new iMacs up to 46% faster with more
RAM, upgrade a Mac mini in 6 minutes, a new ergonomic mouse, x86
emulator for PowerPC, and more.
